Social Security Number (NUSS) in Madrid
Got a job offer in Madrid, or planning to go freelance? You will need a Social Security number before your first payslip or your autónomo registration. We request it for you and make sure your details match your NIE, so nothing gets stuck later.

What it is
The Número de la Seguridad Social (NUSS) is your lifelong affiliation number with the Spanish Social Security system. Your employer in Madrid needs it to register you, you need it to sign up as autónomo, and it links you to the public health system in the Community of Madrid.
It is issued by the Tesorería General de la Seguridad Social. Requests can generally be made online, with an electronic identity, or by appointment at a Social Security office. You will normally need your NIE first.
Who needs it
- Anyone starting their first job in Madrid.
- Freelancers about to register as autónomo.
- Students who will do paid internships.
- Family members who need to be added to a worker's healthcare cover.
- People who worked in Spain years ago and are not sure of their number.
Documents you will usually need
- Passport or EU ID card.
- NIE certificate, TIE or EU registration certificate.
- Form TA.1, filled in and signed.
- An address in Madrid for notifications.
Mismatches between the name on your passport and on your NIE are the most common cause of delays. We check that first.
How we do it
- Check your data. We compare your passport and NIE details.
- Prepare TA.1. We complete the application form for you.
- Submit. We file it online where possible or book the appointment for you.
- Confirm. We send you the resolution with your number and tell your employer or adviser what they need.
How long it takes
When the application is complete, the number is usually assigned within a few working days.
Price
From 60 € + VAT. There is no official fee for the Social Security number. If you are also registering as autónomo in Madrid, we quote both together.
Questions we often get
Can my Madrid employer request it for me?
Many employers do. If yours does not, or you are going freelance, we can do it.
Is the number the same as my health card?
No. The NUSS is your Social Security number. In Madrid, the health card is issued by the regional health service once you are entitled to public healthcare.
I already worked in Spain years ago. Do I need a new one?
No, the number is for life. We can help you find out what it is.
Do I need a NIE first?
Generally yes. If you do not have one yet, we can arrange both.
