Going self-employed
Autónomo Registration in Madrid
Freelancing in Madrid means registering with both the Tax Agency and Social Security before you invoice your first client. We take care of both registrations, choose the right activity codes and explain the monthly contribution in plain English.

What it is
To work for yourself in Spain you register as an autónomo: first with the Agencia Tributaria, declaring your activity and tax obligations (form 036), and then with Social Security in the special scheme for self-employed workers. Contributions are now linked to your expected net income.
The registration is the same in Madrid as anywhere else in Spain, but if your work involves premises or specific licences, the City of Madrid or your town hall may have its own requirements, which we flag in advance.
Who needs it
- Freelancers and consultants based in Madrid.
- EU citizens starting a business activity.
- Non-EU residents whose authorisation allows self-employment.
- People switching from employment to freelancing.
Documents you will usually need
- NIE, TIE or EU registration certificate.
- Social Security number.
- Spanish bank account details.
- A description of your activity and expected income.
- Electronic identity or authorisation for us to file on your behalf.
Not every residence permit allows self-employment. We check yours before registering you.
How we do it
- Activity review. We discuss what you will do and choose the activity codes.
- Tax registration. We file your registration with the Tax Agency.
- Social Security. We register you in the self-employed scheme and set your contribution bracket.
- First steps. We explain your quarterly obligations and refer you to an accountant if you need one.
How long it takes
If your documents are ready, registration usually takes a few working days.
Price
From 90 € + VAT for both registrations. Ongoing accounting and tax returns are not included and can be quoted separately.
Questions we often get
How much will I pay to Social Security each month?
It depends on your expected net income, under the current income-based system. We estimate your bracket when we register you.
Is there a reduced rate for new autónomos?
There is usually a reduced flat rate for people registering for the first time, subject to conditions. We check if you qualify.
Can I register with a student visa?
Not automatically. Student permits have work limitations. Ask us before registering.
Do I need an office in Madrid?
No. Many freelancers work from home. If you open premises, other licences may apply.
