Withdrawal Agreement

Brexit TIE for UK Nationals in Madrid

British nationals who were living in Spain before the end of the transition period, and their families, can hold a TIE that states they are covered by the Withdrawal Agreement. We help Madrid residents exchange an old green certificate, renew the card or apply for family members.

What it is

The Withdrawal Agreement protects the residence rights of UK nationals who were legally living in Spain before 1 January 2021. Their residence document is a specific TIE that shows they are beneficiaries of the agreement.

The card is requested in person from the National Police, with an appointment for the procedure listed in the official system as “POLICÍA-EXP. TARJETA ASOCIADA AL ACUERDO DE RETIRADA … (BREXIT)”; when booking you choose among the Madrid offices that offer it. People without a previous registration certificate or family card first apply to the Oficina de Extranjería. Cases vary a lot: some people still hold the old green certificate, others have a card to renew or relatives joining them.

Who needs it

  • UK nationals in Madrid who still have the green EU certificate.
  • Holders of a Withdrawal Agreement TIE who need to renew it.
  • Family members joining a UK national covered by the agreement.
  • People who need to show residence before 2021 but are unsure of their evidence.

Documents you will usually need

  • Valid UK passport.
  • Your green certificate or current TIE, if you have one.
  • Evidence of residence in Spain before 2021, if you have no certificate.
  • Padrón certificate from your Madrid address.
  • Fee payment receipt.

The evidence needed depends a lot on your history in Spain. We review it before we quote.

Questions we often get

I moved to Madrid after 2021. Does this apply to me?

Generally not. UK nationals arriving after the transition period follow the general rules for non-EU citizens, such as the visas on this site.

Is my green certificate still valid?

It still proves your rights, but the TIE is the recommended document and makes travel and paperwork easier.

Can my non-UK spouse get a card?

Family members may be covered in certain circumstances. We check your case.

Do I need the padrón?

Usually yes, a recent certificate from your Madrid address is requested.
