Residence card for non-EU nationals
TIE Card in Madrid
Arrived in Madrid with your visa, or just had a residence permit approved? The next step is the TIE: fingerprints at a Madrid police station, a fee, and a second visit to collect the card. We plan the dates around your deadline and book both appointments.

What it is
The Tarjeta de Identidad de Extranjero is the physical card that proves a non-EU national is authorised to be in Spain. It carries your NIE, your photograph, the type of permit and its expiry date, and in Madrid you will be asked for it everywhere, from opening a bank account to registering at your health centre.
You request the card in person, at a fingerprint appointment booked in the official cita previa system. In Madrid city, TIE fingerprinting and collection are offered at the CNP office on Calle San Felipe 7, which deals only with TIE cards, and at the CNP office on Avenida de los Poblados s/n (Aluche). If your authorisation was granted by the Large Companies Unit (UGE) of the Dirección General de Gestión Migratoria, as with the digital nomad visa and other Ley 14/2013 permits, the card is issued and collected at the CNP office on Calle Santa Engracia 18. The rule to keep in mind is the deadline: as a general rule you have one month from entering Spain with a long-stay visa, or from when your authorisation is granted, to apply.
Who needs it
- Students, remote workers, retirees and employees who have just landed in Madrid with a national visa.
- People whose residence or work authorisation has been approved by the Madrid foreigners' office.
- Residents who have renewed and need the new card.
- Anyone in Madrid whose card has been lost, stolen or damaged.
- Non-EU relatives of EU citizens living in Madrid.
Documents you will usually need
- Passport with the visa stamped in it, if you entered with one, and a copy.
- Form EX-17, filled in and signed.
- Receipt for the official fee (form 790, code 012).
- One recent colour photograph, passport size, white background.
- The approval of your authorisation, where relevant.
- Usually, a recent padrón certificate from your Madrid address.
The list varies with the type of permit and the police station. We confirm yours before we book anything.
How we do it
- Deadline first. From your entry stamp or approval date we work out how long you have left.
- File. We prepare the EX-17 and the fee document and check your photo and paperwork.
- Fingerprint appointment. We search the Madrid cita previa system, often for several days, and book the fingerprint appointment at an office that covers your address.
- Collection. When the card is ready, we book the collection appointment and remind you what to take.
- Padrón if needed. If you are not yet registered at your Madrid address, we organise the padrón in parallel.
How long it takes
Expect the fingerprint appointment to be the bottleneck. After fingerprints you are given a receipt, and the card is collected later with a separate collection appointment (recogida de TIE). No official waiting time is published, so we give you an estimate for your case before you hire us.
Price
From 200 € + VAT: forms, fee document, fingerprint appointment and collection appointment. The official fee is paid separately. Padrón in Madrid can be added to the same quote.
Questions we often get
Which Madrid police station will I go to?
It depends on your permit. For most cards in Madrid city, fingerprinting and collection are offered at the CNP office on Calle San Felipe 7 and at the CNP office on Avenida de los Poblados s/n (Aluche). For permits granted by the UGE under Ley 14/2013, such as the digital nomad visa, the card is issued and collected at the CNP office on Calle Santa Engracia 18. We tell you the office before you confirm.
My one-month deadline is close and there are no appointments. What now?
Get in touch straight away. We keep searching and tell you how to document that you tried within the deadline. In most cases the card can still be obtained.
Can I travel abroad before I have the card?
It depends on your visa and its dates. Leaving Spain with only the fingerprint receipt can cause problems on return, so check with us before you book flights.
Do I need the padrón before the TIE?
Madrid police stations commonly ask for a recent padrón certificate as proof of address. We normally arrange the padrón first.
